Immortelle - the power of the plant
Immortelle (Helichrysum) is a fragrant Mediterranean plant. It originates from the warm regions of Africa, from where it spread across the globe. Today, it can also be found in our regions. It grows in rocky areas, sandy soils, and on mountain slopes. It needs plenty of sunlight, which is why it is commonly called "Sunflower" or "Goldenflower" in local folklore.
It is a perennial, wild-growing, bushy plant reaching up to 60cm in height, with aromatic yellow flowers gathered in clusters. It is equally resistant to high temperatures and drought. A distinctive feature is that it can grow out of rock.
Our ancestors called it the “immortal flower” because, even after being picked, the flower retains its golden-yellow color for a long time.
In traditional medicine, immortelle is, alongside basil, one of the most important plants. Its scent is a remedy for both the soul and the body. Over centuries, immortelle has been used to treat various ailments in the form of tea, tinctures, or ointments.
In recent years, the commercial plantation and cultivation of immortelle has become increasingly popular. The reason for this is the highly valued essential oil, which is very expensive. It takes about 4 tons of the plant’s aerial parts to produce just 1 liter of oil through the process of dry distillation.
